Scientific Team

Erica Blake has been the Supervisor of Cogent Professionals since November 2011. She also functions as an Analytical Chemist in the QC labs. With 15 years of management experience and a passion for chemical sciences, Blake has been able to focus her professional interests on the supervision of a scientific staff. As the supervisor of the company, Blake is committed to motivating, leading, and developing her employees. She values the unique abilities of each of her employees and challenges each to excel in their own way.

As a chemist with Cogent, Blake has developed her scientific skills beyond basic HPLC, GC, and various physical properties tests. When in the lab, she runs experiments using mass spectrometry, H1 NMR, OR, HPLC purifications, and flash chromatography. These skills, along with overseeing the 12 different areas within Cogent, have allowed Blake to increase productivity, efficiency, and cross-functionality of employees.

Prior to her career at Cogent Professionals, Blake worked on site at DOW Agroscience supporting the Actives to Products Analytical group. Erica Blake was born in Whittier, California and relocated to Cape Cod, Massachusetts going into high school. She graduated from University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2008 with a minor concentration in French Studies.

Stephanie Bartlett is currently serving as the Analytical Chemist IV, Team Leader for the Chiral Purification group and has been since June 2014. Stephanie initially began her career as a contract chemist with VMC working on site at Eli Lilly and Company in the fully integrated remote access Automated Synthesis Lab. During her employment with VMC, her work ethic and skills were noticed by Cogent and offered a position. Stephanie joined Cogent in November 2011 as an Analytical Chemist working with the Physical Properties group in the Solubility and Stability lab. She joined the Chiral Purification lab in July 2012. Stephanie has excelled in all areas she has worked in largely due to her willingness to both learn from and help her peers and colleagues.

During her employment with Cogent Professionals, Stephanie has gained valuable knowledge and experience working with both the Solubility and Stability and the Chiral Purification Groups, furthering her proficiencies in sample preparation, method development, trouble shooting, LCMS, HPLC, and SFC. Her combined education and professional experiences have helped develop Stephanie into a top notch chemist with the ability to adapt to the situation while producing results.

Stephanie was born and raised in Anderson, Indiana. She graduated from Anderson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry in 2009. She was immediately selected by her professors for an accelerated Masters of Business Administration program with Anderson University and graduated in 2010.

Keith began his career by working in the formulations department at Dow Agrosciences. This was where a love for chemistry began, as he graduated with a degree in Biology, and where he developed and honed his laboratory skills. In January, 2012 he started working with Cogent in the normal phase chromatography flash lab. With his hard-work ethic and ability to learn new processes quickly, he set himself apart and became well trusted by Cogent clients.

After working in the flash lab for nearly a year, he was given the opportunity to move to the open-access lab where he excelled doing HPLC and reversed phase flash purifications. His leadership and mentoring skills were rewarded with a promotion to team leader in February of 2014.

Keith has learned many purification techniques and has excelled at being efficient in each technique. He has expert knowledge in normal phase and reversed phase flash chromatography. He has been creative and innovative, which has allowed him to excel running HPLC purifications and large scale normal phase method development. He has shown his ability to learn quickly in the chiral lab where he mastered two purifications instruments. Keith has also processed samples for the APL lab. This required him to learn how to use a couple of automated liquid handlers, which he picked up very quickly in a time of need. He has shown the desire to grow and become a large contributor in several different areas. With his ability to master several types of purification techniques, he is able to train and assist several labs to account for changing work flows.

Keith graduated from Indiana University in 2008 with a B.A. in Biology. In 7 years in the professional industry, he has gained valuable experience as a chemist and has become a very large asset to Cogent Professionals

Jack Calvert is one of Cogent Professionals’ longest-running employees, and he acts as a walking knowledge base for many of the younger employees. He is a jack-of-all-trades, working in several labs and performing dozens of different tests through his career. His advice is sought on matters ranging from lab techniques to retirement planning to computer troubleshooting. If he doesn’t know an answer, he knows how to find it.

He serves a dual role within the company. First, as an analytical chemist, he works in the quantitative biology lab. In this capacity he has distinguished himself for his ability to streamline existing methods and develop new ones to support Lilly’s biologists. He is proficient with most forms of HPLC and Mass Spec, having worked with Waters, Shimadzu, Agilent, and AB Sciex instrumentation. An efficiency expert, he always seeks the simplest and most straightforward way to answer a problem, and this has led to great increases in testing speed and throughput. His colleagues have benefited greatly from his ability to cut to the heart of the problem and see the bigger picture.

His second role is as the company’s safety supervisor. In this capacity, he has worked diligently to make the labs a safer environment for all employees. His philosophy is to increase compliance with the rules by finding ways to make the safer methods easier and more efficient than corner-cutting, rather than raising obstacles to his colleagues’ work. This often requires him to put together multidisciplinary teams to tackle problems, and he has earned the respect of much of Eli Lilly’s safety structure. He coordinates care during emergencies, writes SOP’s, delivers safety presentations, and does whatever else is necessary to help Cogent employees maintain excellent health and safety.

Jack worked as a QC chemist at Micronutrients, performing a battery of tests on incoming and outgoing products. He then transitioned his career to a more biochemical focus by moving to AIT Laboratories, where he practiced toxicology.

Jack earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with a Psychology Minor from Purdue University.
